University Conference

Hey Guys,

So in this blog post here I told you guys a that I had been accepted to attend a conference at one of the best universities in the world and it was a couple days ago, so I thought I would give you guys a rundown of it all and tell you guys how my day went! You might wanna get a snack, it’s gonna be a long one. Let’s get into it!

Okay so I had to be at the university at around 10 o’clock but I live kind of a long distance aways from it so that mean that I had to take the train. I don’t know if you guys know this about me, but I LOVE taking the train. I mean like PROPER trains, with tables and plugs and space and you know…OVERGROUND. I don’t know, there’s just something about taking the train that soothes my mind and relaxes me, which is JUST what I need when I’m about to head off to a top university.

Anyway, I woke up at around 5.30am to get ready and do my thing and be ready for the taxi to come at 6.45am and take me and my mother to the train station. We got there REALLY early so we decided to go and get some breakfast as we didn’t  really have time to have any at home. We went to this little bakery which smelled AMAZING so if any of you guys are looking for a way to win my heart…take me to a bakery that smells good! Or talk to me about aliens, either way works for me.

So after I ate breakfast it was about time for the train so we decided to check in and then take our seats on the train. Me being the extra person that I am, decided to walk all the way to the end of the train because that is the end that gets off closest to the exit. It just so happens that I was right next to a toilet AND had a plug which was awesome as it meant that I could finish up some coursework for Textiles.

The ride was around 2 and a half hours which I had fallen asleep around halfway through and woke up just as it was nearing my destination. Once we got off the train and out of the station, we got a cab straight away to take us to the university. I have to admit, at this point I was literally shitting bricks. I was so scared and anxious and nervous and any other words that could possibly described the feelings I felt.

Of course this wouldn’t be a normal blog post without me doing something stupid. As I was walking up to sign in at this TOP 5 UNIVERSITY IN THE WORLD, I decided it would be a great idea to trip over my own feet and buckle as the registration people watched me in awkward silence…just. fucking. great.

So after public humiliation number 10000000, they told us that we couldn’t register yet because we got there about 20 minutes early so they told us that we could walk around the area for a little bit. I went to a bench and decided to change out of my ‘classy’ shoes that had a heel which made me buckle and change into my trusty pair of trainers or “sneakers” or whatever you guys would call them. After that I went and walked around the campus a little bit, mostly at the nature aspects but I have to say guys, it was AMAZING. Seriously, I took some pretty awesome pictures of all of the amazingness that surrounded me in that moment (did I mention I took my camera with me?) When I tell you these photos are bomb…I’m REALLY not lying.

Okay so after walking around for a bit, I noticed other people my age walking in with their parents and I’m not gonna lie, it was pretty nerve-racking and my social anxiety kicked in a little bit. I actually saw somebody that I had seen on the train and I guess he noticed me too because he smiled and said “hey” to me. So I gave an my best attempt at a normal smile back and then VERY quickly started walking again because I don’t think was up for a full conversation.

After about 10 minutes the place was fully decked with the other 49 people attending and we started to register. I gave them my name and they checked it off the list and told me to find my escort. Guys, I had a fucking ESCORT. I’m not kidding you when I say I felt like a celebrity. So after finding him, he ‘escorted’ me to one of the colleges that made up the university for a talk. During the talk, a guy came round and asked if I wanted any ‘refreshments’…DUDEEE, I felt like a QUEEN. Me being me, I could never turn don free food and took some water and a muffin which was AMAZING btw.

The first talk kinda gave us a rough idea of what A-levels to take to help us get in. The whole thing was kind of like a “listen, we want you to come in 2 years so we are setting you guys up with the best info possible to make it happen’.

We then went into a more ‘business’ setting and we all went around telling everyone what GCSEs we are take. As you guys know I picked Sociology and a design and technology. Well, it turns out I was the only one of my kind as virtually EVERYONE else there picked more ‘serious’ subjects. I was the only one who had chosen a creative subject and I could just FEEL the tension in the room when I said it. It was kinda like disappointment but I decided to embrace it and tell myself I was special to make myself feel better (get you a best friend like me).

After about another hour of professor and alumni talks, we had lunch which was kinda basic buy hey, who am I to judge? After that, they decided that they wanted to give us a tour of the university. That’s right kids, your girl got to see EVERYTHING. The campus, the Dorm rooms, the hang out rooms, bars, EVERYTHING. After looking around and taking some more pics, I decided that I HAVE to come here. It’s absolutely beautiful and I REALLY think I would fit in so well there. Idk, you know when you just have that instant connection with something and you just KNOW that you have to have it or be there? Well that’s what happened to me.

After the tour, we then got to go to masterclasses. I decided to pick Sociology and Philosophy and Ethics. We got to go to a proper university classroom and have an actual lesson with actual university professors. It was such a good experience but it was definitely MUCH harder than the lessons that I’m used to. I actually met the guy from the train again and we spoke for a while. Turns out he was pretty cool. EVERYONE was great for that matter. I met these two girls in my Philosophy and Ethics class and they were literally the funniest people every. They brightened up my experience and hopefully I’ll get to see them again one day!

After the masterclass, we got to have a one to one with a student. I had a guy who actually went to one of the colleges that I’m thinking of applying to. He told me that it’s not as intimidating as it seems and that the people here are actually really laid back and chill and that just made me love it more. He then gave me some tips on applying to the college which REALLY helped so if I get in, I owe it to him.

After this, it was about time to leave. I took the liberty to swipe a few more snacks (what?  I like food!) and then waited for my mother outside. After she came, we still had a few hours to kill so we decided to get food (of course) and then go shopping.

Overall, the day was kinda fun which I did not expect at all and I really learned a lot of stuff that I’m gonna take with me into the future!

Okay, so that is going to be it for this blog post! I kinda rushed the end because I really wanted to get it up so I hope you guys don’t mind.

I hope you enjoyed this blog post and I’ll see you guys soon with another one!

Love,

The Awkward Expert🌺♥
